Although the President maintained that the aircraft change was unrelated to security matters, he acknowledged to reporters that he ranks as the primary target on Iran’s elimination list.
Two American officials explained to ABC News that the revised travel arrangements were not triggered by any particular threat, but were partially shaped by variations in the security capabilities between the two aircraft. The Secret Service’s approach to presidential protection has remained consistent regardless of location, according to Mike Centrella, the agency’s former field operations chief.
“Simply doesn’t take chances when it comes to the president’s safety, whether at home or abroad,” Centrella stated regarding the agency’s philosophy.
“Presidential travel is incredibly complex, and every movement and potential risk is carefully considered,” Centrella added. “The mindset is always the same: plan for what you know, prepare for what you don’t and make sure you’re ready for the unexpected.”

Steven Cheung, who serves as White House communications director, provided additional context on Thursday. He emphasized that the new Air Force One represents cutting-edge aviation technology enhanced with comprehensive security measures designed to protect both the President and his accompanying staff.
“As the president has said recently, there are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal — including distraction and misdirection — to address those threats,” Cheung explained.
The New York Times initially brought attention to the Secret Service’s recommendation regarding the aircraft selection. When the President ultimately chose to travel on the older Air Force One from Turkey to connect with the newer aircraft in England, passengers received instructions to maintain lowered window shades throughout the journey.
Flight Details and Public Reaction
Flight tracking information revealed that the presidential aircraft did not activate its tracking system until reaching airspace above the Black Sea near Istanbul. Despite maintaining that no security concerns necessitated the aircraft change, Trump offered an alternative explanation for the window shade instructions, suggesting passengers might have been asked to keep them down because they were “probably on a dangerous flight.”
“Well, yeah, because you’re, you know, probably on a dangerous flight, because of the sleaze bags that we have to deal with,” Trump remarked, specifically referencing Iran in his comments.

While government officials continue to assert that the newly acquired aircraft satisfies all necessary safety and security standards for presidential transport, the accelerated timeline of approximately one year for the retrofitting process has generated some scrutiny. Critics have questioned whether the Qatari-donated plane possesses equivalent defensive capabilities compared to the traditional Air Force One.
