The parents of Nolan Wells call for clarity after learning that their son’s phone had been returned with several texts and Snapchat messages apparently deleted.
According to officials, a friend contacted the Coast Guard around 11 p.m. on July 4, while Wells’ mother reached out to the sheriff’s office near midnight as July 5 began. Christine Wonsley noted that the family had been tracking Nolan’s location through the Life360 application, which added to their confusion when his whereabouts became unclear.
Family Skepticism and Growing Concerns
While some friends claimed Nolan voluntarily stayed behind while others left, the parents of Nolan Wells call this explanation insufficient. “That we cannot answer. I just, I can’t — I can’t fathom why he would,” Christine Wonsley told reporters. Her husband Elmore added, “We always told him, if you go with a group, you stay with a group.”
Christine Wonsley also revealed that when she retrieved Nolan’s phone from friends, she found that certain messages had been removed. “When we finally got his phone, me and my sister went through the phone. We went in his Snapchat. He had two accounts. Absolutely nothing,” she explained. “It wasn’t even 24 hours, which is how long videos and pictures stay in Snapchat… even my sister was like, yeah, that’s suspicious.”

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing the family, voiced additional concerns during media appearances. “No young person leaves their cell phone,” Crump told “GMA.” He connected these concerns to broader historical context, stating, “It’s not adding up, and that is the problem when you think about the history of Mississippi.”
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter provided updates during his “GMA” interview on Friday. He indicated that current evidence does not suggest foul play, though he emphasized that the investigation remains active. “We’re working towards the same goal as the family.
