Two Met Officers Charged in Tragic Crash Involving Pregnant Woman
A fatal collision involving a police car has led to the arrest of two Metropolitan Police officers, PC Chris Johnson and former PC Danny Tomkins. The incident, which occurred near the Kidbrooke Park junction on the A20 in southeast London, resulted in the death of a woman who was heavily pregnant at the time, along with her unborn child. The crash took place on 17 October 2024, with the child succumbing to injuries immediately, while the woman later passed away in hospital.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigated the event, leading to charges of dangerous driving against both officers. PC Johnson faces additional accusations of causing death by dangerous driving. The case will be heard at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 28 May, where the officers are expected to appear. The IOPC has emphasized the complexity of its inquiry, ensuring all evidence is thoroughly examined.
“Our thoughts remain with the woman’s family and friends, who continue to grieve the loss of her and her unborn child,” said Acting Det Ch Supt James Derham. “This incident has been described as a tragic and devastating event. The IOPC’s investigation was meticulous, and we have collaborated closely with them throughout the process. At this stage, further comments would risk influencing the upcoming court proceedings.”
