Manhunt after attempted arson attack on synagogue
Manhunt Following Synagogue Arson Attempt
Two individuals are currently under investigation after an attempted arson attack at the Finchley Reform Synagogue in north London. The suspects, who were wearing balaclavas, approached the building at approximately 01:00 BST and threw a brick alongside two bottles believed to contain petrol. Despite the threat, no harm was done to the structure or anyone present.
Antisemitic Hate Crime Designation
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed the incident is being treated as an antisemitic hate crime. This follows a similar attack last month, where four ambulances associated with a Jewish community charity were set ablaze. Counter-terrorism units are now assisting in both cases.
“This alarming attempt to target a local synagogue comes after a series of troubling attacks on the Jewish community in Finchley and Golders Green,” said Sarah Sackman, the Labour MP for Finchley and Golders Green. She added, “I will not let this become the new standard for safety in our area.”
“British Jews must be able to go about their daily lives without fear—whether dropping off children at a nursery or gathering at a place of worship. We do not want to live in an environment where we feel the need to constantly guard ourselves,” she continued.
Community Response and Police Actions
The Community Security Trust (CST), which operates security initiatives and monitors antisemitism across the UK, is supporting the synagogue and coordinating with police. Det Ch Supt Luke Williams noted the Met is aware of the community’s heightened anxiety, particularly following the Golders Green arson incident.
“We are working closely with the synagogue and engaging with local leaders to address concerns,” Williams stated. “The police are treating this matter with the utmost urgency and are actively seeking any evidence, such as CCTV or dash cam footage, that could aid in identifying the perpetrators.”
