Essex Police responded to Long Hide, a residence in the village of Leaden Roding near Dunmow, at 22:45 BST on Friday. The force discovered a 19-year-old woman suffering critical injuries at the scene. Despite swift intervention by emergency responders, she was declared deceased on arrival, according to the police statement.
A 37-year-old man from Dunmow was detained on suspicion of allowing a dog to behave dangerously and causing fatal harm. The animal was confiscated by authorities, and specialists secured the area to ensure safety. A temporary police cordon remained around the property on Sunday.
“This incident will undoubtedly shock the local community,” said Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Hooper. “Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who passed away yesterday. Investigators are now examining the circumstances in detail.”
Authorities are seeking public assistance, urging anyone with footage—such as CCTV or dashcam recordings—to share it. The case has been logged as incident 1419, dated 10 April. Meanwhile, St Michael and All Angels church announced plans to hold a prayer service and light candles on Sunday afternoon.
“We will be joining in prayer and lighting candles as a gesture of remembrance,” stated the church. This follows the tragic event that occurred at the house.
