Star Trek icon Brent Spiner makes a rare sighting at 77, see him now
Recently, the iconic Star Trek figure Brent Spiner was spotted in the Hollywood Hills, showcasing his vibrant presence at 77 years old. The actor, known for his groundbreaking role as Data, has made a rare public appearance, offering fans a glimpse of his enduring charisma.
A Legacy on the USS Enterprise-D
Spiner first gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Data, a sentient android crew member of the starship USS Enterprise-D, on Star Trek: The Next Generation. The character, brought to life with remarkable precision, became a cornerstone of the series, which featured Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and a stellar cast including Whoopi Goldberg and LeVar Burton.
His role as Data mirrored the impact of Leonard Nimoy’s Dr. Spock from the original 1960s Star Trek series, blending intellectual depth with an enigmatic allure. The character’s nuanced performance resonated with audiences, solidifying Spiner’s place in sci-fi history.
From Stage to Stardom
Before his breakthrough in television, Spiner built a foundation on the New York stage during the 1970s. By the 1980s, he had joined the original cast of the acclaimed musical Sunday in the Park with George, which premiered on Broadway in 1984. The production, featuring Stephen Sondheim’s score and Mandy Patinkin as Georges Seurat, also included Bernadette Peters and a supporting role for Spiner.
Following the musical’s success, Spiner moved to Los Angeles, where he navigated various TV roles before landing the iconic Data part in 1987. His career spanned decades, with appearances in films such as Independence Day and the Martin Scorsese classic The Aviator, as well as stage revivals like 1776 and Man of La Mancha.
A New Chapter in the Spotlight
Spiner has remained a fixture in the Star Trek universe, reprising Data’s role across multiple spin-off films and recent series like Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Lower Decks. His recent return to the franchise has included both on-screen and off-screen contributions, with fans catching him on screen from 2020 to 2023 and hearing his voice in the animated series Lower Decks in 2024.
Currently, the actor is embracing a fresh venture: a celebrity interview podcast. A month ago, he revealed that he and his Next Generation co-star Jonathan Frakes are launching a new show, titled Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny. In their introductory YouTube video, they emphasized that it is not a Star Trek-focused podcast, though they acknowledged their “surrendered to fate” acceptance of the franchise’s inevitable presence.
“This is not a Star Trek podcast,” they insisted in their introductory video, while humorously admitting their podcast’s unavoidable connection to the show that launched their careers.
Spiner’s recent appearance in casual attire—a snowy-haired figure draped in an olive green hoodie over a black t-shirt—highlighted his continued presence in the public eye, even as he ventures into new creative territories.
