Spain formally dismisses ambassador to Israel amid tensions with Tel Aviv
Spain’s administration has removed Ana Sálomon from her role as ambassador to Israel. The move was confirmed in the official gazette on Tuesday, following approval by the Council of Ministers. This action leaves the country’s embassy in Tel Aviv without a top representative, with the position now held by a chargé d’affaires.
The decision follows a pattern of reciprocal actions between the two nations. In May 2024, Israel recalled its ambassador to Madrid, Rodica Radian-Gordon, after Spain recognized Palestine as a state. A replacement was anticipated, but the initial candidate resigned to accept another posting. Netanyahu’s government did not appoint a new ambassador, leaving the role vacant.
“What we are witnessing in Gaza is a genocide,” said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in September, prompting Israel to accuse him of antisemitism and restrict entry for two of his ministers.
Relations have since deteriorated further. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar labeled Sánchez’s remarks as antisemitic, escalating the already tense dynamic. Spain’s choice to step down from its ambassadorial post mirrors Israel’s earlier move, signaling a shift in diplomatic standing between the two allies.
With the ambassador’s position now vacant, Spain will keep its diplomatic mission under the charge of a chargé d’affaires. This temporary arrangement highlights the ongoing strain in bilateral ties, which have been tested by conflicting narratives over the war in Gaza and the recognition of a Palestinian state.
