Johannes Hahn Resigns as EU Special Envoy for Cyprus, Citing ‘Other Commitments’
The European Commission announced that Johannes Hahn has stepped down from his position as the EU’s special envoy for Cyprus. In a letter to President Ursula von der Leyen and the United Nations, Hahn explained that his decision was driven by other responsibilities. During a press briefing in Brussels, a Commission spokesperson addressed the development, stating that Hahn’s resignation was due to these external obligations.
“Mr Hahn has resigned from his role as the Commission’s special envoy because of other commitments,” said spokesperson Maciej Beretetski. “The Commission acknowledges his choice and expresses gratitude for his work in facilitating dialogue over the past year. Ms von der Leyen will determine the future course of action in the coming weeks,” the spokesperson added.
Hahn was appointed to the position in May 2025 following sustained efforts by Cypriot leaders and the country’s president to secure the EU’s involvement in resolving the Cyprus issue. The island nation has remained divided since a 1974 Turkish military intervention following a Greek-supported coup. His departure marks a shift in the EU’s diplomatic approach to the ongoing conflict.
