German Soldier Suspended for Leaking Defense Procurement Plans to Lobbyist
A senior officer in the Bundeswehr, Germany’s military, has been temporarily removed from duty following accusations of sharing details about planned defense purchases with a lobbyist. The breach came to light through a report by the German news magazine Der Spiegel, which identified the individual as an unnamed frigate captain with direct ties to the Ministry of Defence.
The leaked information allegedly included a list of over 150 procurement items, spanning weapons and equipment for modernizing the country’s military. While some details were disclosed in September 2025 by Politico, the complete list was classified. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence told Die Zeit that an investigation was swiftly initiated, leading to the identification of a BMVg employee as a suspect.
“The ministry immediately launched an investigation and identified a BMVg employee as a suspect,” the spokesperson stated to Die Zeit.
Criminal and disciplinary probes are ongoing, though specifics of the incident remain undisclosed. The alleged act is classified as a “betrayal of secrets,” with penalties varying based on the severity and type of information compromised. In a similar case, a police officer who leaked internal data faced a fine, while more severe breaches could result in suspension, dismissal, or imprisonment.
In autumn 2025, Politico published an article detailing Germany’s “337 billion euro military wish list,” a 39-page document outlining planned purchases across land, air, sea, space, and cyberspace. The list sparked controversy, particularly over the names of potential contractors. Notably, around €182 billion in contracts were allocated to German firms, with Rheinmetall emerging as the top recipient.
