Boutique whisky-themed property that hides a mini bottle in every room named the UK’s best hotel

Boutique Whisky-Themed Property Named UK’s Premier Hotel

A Scottish retreat in the Inner Hebrides has captured the top spot on the UK’s list of finest accommodations. The Ardbeg House, inspired by the iconic Ardbeg Distillery, offers a unique blend of whisky culture and luxury. Guests are treated to an immersive experience, starting with a tour of the distillery during their stay, while subtle surprises await in every room—a tiny bottle of whisky cleverly concealed in each.

With just 12 individually styled rooms, the property stands out for its unconventional charm. The Times, in its 50 Best Places to Stay compilation, praised Ardbeg House for its distinctiveness, calling it “a bit off-the-wall, nothing like anywhere else we visited for our list.” Each space is crafted to echo the island’s rugged landscapes and ancient tales, with interiors designed by Russell Sage Studio.

Design That Reflects Myth and Terrain

Themes like “smoke” pay homage to the distillery’s signature peated whisky, incorporating elements such as a headboard shaped like peat stacks and wispy smoke patterns in the bathroom. The hotel’s Islay Bar is a standout destination, showcasing over 100 varieties of whisky, including the exclusive Badger Juice, available only here.

Even the restaurant embraces the island’s spirit. Local catches, whisky-smoked beef, and bread made from the same grain used in distillery production highlight the culinary connection to Ardbeg’s heritage. The Times evaluates properties based on location, design, food, drink, service, and affordability, factors that contributed to Ardbeg House’s prestigious recognition.

Islay’s Legacy and Travel Options

Ardbeg Distillery, which has been crafting whisky since 1798, is part of a legacy that the hotel now builds upon. Owned by Glenmorangie Company, a subsidiary of Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH), the property opened last September. Travelers can reach Islay via a 25-minute flight from Glasgow or a two-hour ferry ride from Kennacraig.

Islay is home to 10 operational distilleries, with three connected by the Three Distilleries Pathway. The Fèis Ìle festival, held annually in the summer, brings the island to life with open distillery days, traditional music, and dance. Beyond its whisky reputation, the region also boasts breathtaking coastlines and diverse wildlife, including seals, otters, and deer, as well as over 200 bird species.
