Tilly Norwood Creator Insists Controversial AI Actress is ‘Not Malicious’

When the debut of the world’s first AI actress was unveiled last year, it ignited a wave of criticism, with notable opposition from Hollywood figures like Emily Blunt and Sophie Turner.

At first glance, Tilly Norwood resembles a typical young actress—her image is that of an ‘English rose’ with striking brown eyes, a radiant smile, and a near-flawless hairstyle. However, this persona is entirely artificial. The character was crafted by Eline Van der Velden, a Dutch artist, comedian, and physicist, who established the AI production firm Particle6 Group more than a decade ago.

After a four-month development phase, Tilly was introduced globally, initially gaining traction in the UK where reactions were largely favorable. Yet, the narrative shifted dramatically at the Zurich Summit, where her agency affiliation sparked controversy. Hollywood quickly responded with skepticism, leading to widespread criticism of Tilly and Eline herself.

Reactions Across Borders

Eline noted that the US reaction was more intense, citing the higher number of working actors who feared Tilly would replace human talent. She attributed this to the U.S. market’s size and its commercial nature, which she argued made innovation harder compared to other regions.

“She is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work—a piece of art. Nothing, certainly not an AI character, can take away the craft or joy of human performance,” Eline stated when addressing initial backlash.

Tilly’s Instagram bio captures her defiant attitude: “You’ll either get it or pretend you don’t.” The concept began when Eline noticed AI influencers in her social media feed, inspiring her to create her own AI-driven character. “It was like a creative experiment,” she recalled. “As a scientist and artist, I thought, ‘Let me try this out and see what I can do.’”

Eline emphasized that Tilly was never intended to be harmful. “She was never going to take anyone’s jobs or anything like that, and we still haven’t done that,” she clarified. While some compared Tilly to Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman, her presence is largely confined to AI-generated content. No real-life co-stars are planned for her roles.

AI as a Creative Evolution

Eline views AI actors as the natural progression of the entertainment industry, predicting a ‘creative renaissance’ in the near future. She also framed embracing the technology as a strategy to ‘future-proof’ her career. “You can still be creative—those thoughts go into Tilly when she needs to become a new character,” she said, highlighting the role of her own vision in the project.

“It’s a new evolution in our industry, and creatives need to be ready for it. If we hadn’t done it, someone else would have,” Eline added, explaining her goal to spark dialogue about AI’s role in entertainment.

Despite fears of job displacement, Eline argued that AI is driving new opportunities. “It’s actually hiring a crazy amount of people for roles that didn’t exist before,” she observed. When asked about common misunderstandings, she focused on the belief that Tilly’s creation required minimal effort. In reality, 15 individuals collaborated to bring her to life.
