Seven arrested at base demo accused of supporting banned group
Seven Detained Over Alleged Support for Banned Organization During Base Protest
Suffolk Police reported the arrest of seven individuals during demonstrations at an RAF airbase, citing suspicion of backing the proscribed group Palestine Action. The arrests occurred on Sunday as protesters gathered outside Lakenheath airbase, part of a broader peace campaign opposing the Iran conflict.
Protest Context and Legal Action
The gathering was prompted by media reports indicating a US fighter jet, shot down in Iran on Friday, was stationed at the base. A police statement noted that the detainees were held under “suspicion of supporting a proscribed organisation,” emphasizing the legal process. “They have been taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning,” the spokesperson added, highlighting the agency’s commitment to enforcing laws impartially.
“Suffolk Police has a duty to enforce the law without fear or favour and as it currently stands, not as it might be in the future. As such, where offences are believed to have occurred appropriate action will be taken.”
Legal Ruling and Ongoing Appeal
Although the High Court deemed Palestine Action’s proscription unlawful in February, it granted the Home Office permission to challenge the decision. This means the group remains banned while the appeal is processed. The recent protests were part of a six-day peace camp, which includes a continuous vigil at the base, set to conclude on Monday.
Additional Charges and Protests
The Lakenheath Alliance For Peace stated the arrests followed a speech by retired colonel Chris Romberg. Meanwhile, Suffolk Police confirmed two participants faced charges for wilful obstruction of the highway, stemming from a blockade at the base on Saturday.
