Afrika Bambaataa, a pivotal figure in the origins of hip-hop culture, has passed away at 67, according to the Hip Hop Alliance. The organization highlighted his contributions to a “movement centered on peace, unity, love, and enjoyment,” underscoring his role in hip-hop’s evolution as both a musical style and a worldwide phenomenon.

Born Lance Taylor in the Bronx, Bambaataa grew up during the height of the black liberation movement. As a teenager, he joined the Black Spades gang, later leveraging his leadership skills to establish the Universal Zulu Nation, an international organization dedicated to redirecting youth energy from violence toward artistic expression.

His 1982 track *Planet Rock* earned him global acclaim and is often cited as a defining work of the 1980s hip-hop scene. The song, which blended funk and electro elements, became a cornerstone of the genre’s development. In 2016, Bambaataa stepped down from leading the Universal Zulu Nation after allegations of sexual misconduct from the 1980s and 1990s emerged, which he consistently denied.

TMZ first reported his death, stating that Bambaataa succumbed to cancer complications in Pennsylvania. The rapper, who was raised by Jamaican and Barbadian immigrant parents, had long been celebrated for transforming the Bronx into “the birthplace of a culture now spanning the globe,” as noted by Reverend Dr Kurtis Blow Walker, the Hip Hop Alliance’s executive director.

Despite his contributions, the allegations of child sexual abuse and trafficking cast a shadow over his legacy. In a statement, Bambaataa called the claims “unfounded and an attempt to undermine my reputation in hip-hop.” The Guardian later reported that he lost a civil case in 2025, citing his failure to appear in court.

“These accusations are baseless and represent a cowardly effort to tarnish my legacy at this time,” Bambaataa stated in response to the allegations.

The Hip Hop Alliance acknowledged the impact of these controversies, noting that they sparked “significant discourse within our community” about the rapper’s enduring influence and the complexities surrounding his life and work.
