Trump attacks Pope over criticism of Iran war
Trump Criticizes Pope for Opposition to Iran War and Immigration Stance
US President Donald Trump recently targeted Pope Leo with a pointed critique, highlighting his disagreement with the pontiff’s views on US immigration policies and the ongoing conflict with Iran. The remarks, posted on Truth Social, labeled the Pope as “weak on crime and poor in foreign policy,” later followed by a more casual statement that he was “not a big fan.” This came amid the Pope’s 11-day African tour, his second major diplomatic mission since taking office last year.
Pope’s Stance on War and Immigration
Pope Leo has been vocal in condemning the war, calling Trump’s threats to “destroy Iranian civilization” “unacceptable” and urging the president to seek a diplomatic resolution. He also questioned whether Trump’s immigration policies align with the Catholic Church’s commitment to life, framing them as inconsistent with broader moral principles.
“Trump’s rhetoric about Iran is not only harsh but also lacks a strategic path to de-escalation,” Pope Leo remarked during a public address.
In Sunday’s post, Trump added that the Pope was “weak on nuclear weapons,” seemingly referring to Iran’s nuclear ambitions as a justification for the US and Israel’s military actions. He further suggested that Leo’s election was influenced by his American identity, implying that his papacy was a reaction to Trump’s leadership. “If I weren’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican,” Trump asserted.
“I don’t think he’s doing a very good job, he likes crime, I guess,” Trump explained to reporters, adding, “He’s a very liberal person who doesn’t believe we should toy with a country seeking nuclear power.”
The comments sparked backlash from Catholics, with some comparing the Pope’s treatment to historical relationships with fascist leaders. Massimo Faggioli, a scholar, noted, “Not even Hitler or Mussolini attacked the Pope so openly and directly,” according to Reuters. Meanwhile, Pope Leo has consistently called for global peace, urging nations to “lay down weapons” and “choose peace” over conflict in his Easter address.
Context of the Pope’s Diplomatic Efforts
Pope Leo’s focus on de-escalation in the Middle East contrasts with Trump’s confrontational approach. His public statements emphasize reducing violence and fostering dialogue, even as critics accuse him of being too accommodating to global powers.
