Four arrested over murder of Scottish businessman in Kenya
Four Arrested in Connection with Scottish Businessman’s Murder in Kenya
Kenyan authorities have detained four suspects in relation to the fatal attack on Campbell Scott, a 58-year-old Scottish businessman, whose remains were discovered in a sack within Makongo Forest. The incident occurred in February last year, approximately 60 miles from Nairobi, where Scott had been residing. His body was found in the forest on February 24, after he failed to meet colleagues for a presentation at the JW Marriott Hotel in Nairobi’s Westlands district.
Operation Unveils Links to Robbery and Murder
The arrests were the result of a joint effort by multiple agencies, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the SCCIO Nyali and Msambweni units. The suspects, Bernard Mbusu, Isaac Kinoti Kobia, Evans Muthengi Mutaki, and Kelvin Mwangi Njoroge, were apprehended at Ideal Apartments in Ukunda, a coastal town near Mombasa. Their capture followed an investigation into a violent robbery involving an American national in Nyali, which connected them to further criminal activity.
“The suspects were apprehended through a coordinated operation by DCI officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, working alongside counterparts in SCCIO Nyali and SCCIO Msambweni (Ukunda).”
Scott, a senior director at FICO, a credit scoring firm, had traveled to Nairobi for a conference before vanishing. He was last seen the evening prior to his disappearance at Havana nightclub. Kenyan police indicated he was likely taken to a property in the Pipeline district, a slum area 9.3 miles from his hotel, where he was detained to access his financial resources. His body was later found in a pineapple sack, hands tied, in Makongo Forest.
Post-Mortem Findings and Further Investigations
A post-mortem examination yielded inconclusive results, though experts noted the injuries were insufficient to account for his death. Initially, two individuals—a taxi driver and a nightclub waiter—were questioned, as they were the last to see Scott alive. Two were arrested in March last year, with one appearing in court charged with murder. Authorities then sought three additional suspects, leading to the recent arrests.
During a search of the suspects’ residence, stolen goods such as an HP laptop, mobile phones, foreign currencies, credit cards, cheque books, and PDQ card readers were recovered. The DCI confirmed the suspects were linked to both Scott’s murder and multiple violent robberies in the region.
