World’s best keeper? Raya helps Arsenal get back on track

This season, David Raya has posted seven clean sheets in the Champions League, a feat that has positioned him as a key player for Arsenal. The Spanish international’s recent performance against Sporting exemplifies his importance, contributing to a 1-0 victory with a string of crucial interventions. His efforts were highlighted by Kai Havertz, who scored the decisive late goal, as the team’s captain praised Raya’s contributions.

“I think [he is] still underestimated in the world of football but for me, the last two seasons, the best keeper in the world,” Havertz remarked. “He’s outstanding, he’s saved us so many times and we’re very glad to have him.”

Raya’s consistent form has made him a standout performer, especially considering Arsenal’s recent struggles. The team faced consecutive defeats for the first time this season, but Raya was not involved in either loss. Arteta had relied on Kepa Arrizabalaga during those matches, which included a Carabao Cup final clash against Manchester City and an FA Cup quarter-final against Southampton. A defensive error by Kepa in the City game gifted the opposition an early goal, prolonging Arsenal’s wait for a major trophy since 2020.

Raya’s latest clean sheet in the Champions League not only helped Arsenal secure a vital result but also marked his seventh such achievement in the competition this season—more than any other team or goalkeeper. “That’s something we’ve worked on a lot,” Raya explained. “It’s so important for us, those clean sheets make it easier to win games. It showed tonight, scoring in the last minute and keeping that clean sheet decides those type of games.”

Arsenal’s goalkeeper has become a central figure in the team’s leadership, often tasked with supporting the attack as well as defending. His ability to distribute the ball effectively and make strategic decisions has transformed Arsenal into a more dynamic side. “The keeper in the last few years has changed and evolved rapidly,” Arteta noted. “The amount of things that we ask him to do, it’s a lot. But many positions have very similar situations and demands right now, and the players have to adapt to that.”

Raya’s impact is further underscored by his record in the Premier League, where he has maintained 15 clean sheets in 31 appearances—tied for the league’s highest. While he shared the Golden Glove award with Matz Sels in the 2024-25 campaign, Arsenal hopes that Raya’s individual success will align with their team’s triumphs. “He’s extraordinary, magnificent, incredible,” Arteta said. “I don’t know the right adjective. We are so happy to have him.”
