Davina McCall reveals her visceral reaction to being diagnosed with breast cancer – just WEEKS after a mammogram came back ‘clear’

Davina McCall’s Health Update: Breast Cancer Diagnosis After ‘Clear’ Mammogram

Davina McCall recently disclosed her intense emotional response to learning she had breast cancer, just months after a routine mammogram showed ‘no issues.’ The revelation triggered a sudden outburst of anger when she returned home.

The Emotional Outburst

The 58-year-old discovered her condition in November of the previous year after manually checking her breasts during a break from filming *The Masked Singer* at ITV. Her diagnosis occurred almost a year to the day following the removal of a benign brain tumor.

‘He was like, “okay, so look, I’m just letting you know if you if you want to kind of get angry with me or just like, tell me you’re angry. Like, you know, I’m here.”‘

Her now husband, Michael Douglas, was present when she received the news. She recounted how he provided an emotional release for her, encouraging her to express her feelings without judgment.

Reluctance and Release

Despite her initial attempt to remain composed, Davina eventually let her frustration take over. She described throwing cushions and a pillow in a cathartic display of emotion.

‘Then I got really angry, and I got the cushions out and the pillow [punching them] and that was quite therapeutic,’ she said.

On Heart Breakfast, Davina mentioned that the timing of her cancer diagnosis couldn’t have been more challenging. She shared the news on Instagram in November, emphasizing that the cancer was detected ‘very very early’ but would still require radiotherapy.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Davina highlighted the importance of self-examination, noting she first noticed a lump while filming *The Masked Singer* and was prompted to check it after seeing a sign in the Lorraine studio toilets. A biopsy confirmed the diagnosis, which she treated with a lumpectomy.

‘I spent 2025 trying to get over the symptoms of the brain tumour,’ she said. ‘It was really hard on Michael and me. It was a difficult year.’

She also shared that the cancer was diagnosed nearly two years after her brain tumor ordeal, describing the experience as feeling ‘punched in the face by the universe.’

Hope and Healing

Davina completed a short course of radiotherapy in January 2026 and is now ‘cancer free.’ She added: ‘But I was very lucky and this is a reminder to all women to check yourself. I found a lump in October last year and I had a mammogram in August.’

‘Don’t think, “I had a mammogram recently, it can’t be cancer,” because it could be. Really check. If you’ve got something, get it looked at. It takes seconds.’

Doctors advise women to monitor for painless, hard, and irregularly shaped lumps, which may not be visible but can be detected through self-examination. Symptoms to watch for include dimpling skin, color changes, discharge, and nipple rashes or crusting.

A New Perspective on Life

Reflecting on her health challenges, Davina expressed a renewed sense of freedom from fear of mortality. She stated: ‘I was already a clean eater – I eat nauseatingly clean – and I exercise, but I want to get negativity out of my life.’

‘I deleted accounts that made me sad or angry. My “for you” page is now puppies, babies and hairdos.’

She also shared her experience with ‘scanxiety,’ the anxiety of waiting for medical scans, saying she felt nothing during a recent check-up. ‘I’m not afraid of dying anymore. It feels liberating,’ she added.

Medical Statistics

Breast cancer is a widespread condition globally, with over 55,000 new cases annually in the UK and 11,500 deaths each year. In the U.S., it affects 266,000 individuals yearly, resulting in 40,000 fatalities.

Recent Health Revelation

Earlier in November 2024, Davina surprised fans by revealing she had undergone brain surgery to remove a colloid cyst, a rare, non-cancerous tumor affecting three in a million people. The cysts, filled with a gel-like substance, are often asymptomatic until they grow large enough to cause issues.
