Influencer caught smuggling £150,000 of cannabis back from Thailand
A social media influencer attempted to smuggle over £150,000 worth of cannabis through Edinburgh Airport and is now facing potential jail time. The 23-year-old, Ellie Crampsie, was arrested after customs officials allegedly discovered more than 17kg of the drug in her luggage during her return to the UK from a holiday in Thailand last year.
Crampsie, who runs a beauty business and promotes city events for thousands of followers, pleaded guilty to being involved in the supply of cannabis on March 26 at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. Prosecutors stated she was intercepted by Border Force officers in April, having traveled from Thailand to the Scottish capital via Paris.
“Crampsie was asked standard questions by the officer and confirmed she had come from Thailand,” said Emma Laing, the prosecutor.
The court heard that 17 sealed cannabis packs were found in her suitcase, with the total value estimated between £115,000 and £151,000. Her defense lawyer highlighted the support of her parents, who attended the hearing. Sheriff Graeme Watson adjourned sentencing to review a criminal justice social work report and a liberty restriction assessment.
Watson emphasized: “This adjournment doesn’t indicate any pre-judgment of the case. All sentencing options remain available for consideration next.”
A parallel case involving a young mother
Crampsie’s case mirrors that of a 22-year-old mother, Poppie Kudieersky, who avoided imprisonment after being caught smuggling £285,000 of cannabis into the UK from Thailand. Kudieersky claimed traffickers would have killed her child if she refused to act as a drug courier.
Kudieersky was arrested at Manchester Airport when customs officers stopped her travel companion and seized two suitcases containing 28.5kg of the drug. The incident was covered in a separate report titled “Four arrested for ‘murder’ of young woman found in street with serious injuries.”
