British teen Sky Brown is skateboarding world champion again

British Teen Sky Brown Secures Skateboarding World Championship Title Again

At 17, Sky Brown has once more claimed the skateboarding world championship, following her earlier victory at the age of 14. The competition in São Paolo, Brazil, was disrupted by heavy rain and unfavorable weather, leading to a decision to finalize results after only two of the scheduled four runs.

“This feels huge and I’m so thankful,” Brown remarked, sharing her triumph with her father, Stewart Brown, a former skateboarder. She also reflected on global issues, adding: “There are bigger things and I just pray for peace for the world.”

Brown’s win came amid challenging conditions, with officials citing unsafe terrain as a reason for halting the event. She was announced as champion with a score of 88.16, narrowly edging out Japan’s Mizuho Hasegawa (84.36) and the United States’ Minna Stess (83.90). The victory holds special significance as it coincided with International Women’s Day, a milestone Brown described as deeply meaningful.

Brown now holds the 7th position in the world rankings, with 15-year-old Hasegawa emerging as the top-ranked competitor. The two athletes shared a heartfelt embrace after the contest, highlighting their mutual respect. Brown’s journey to this moment began with a childhood passion for skateboarding; she competed at the US Open in 2016 at just eight years old and officially represented Great Britain in 2018.

Her accomplishments extend beyond the podium. At 13, she became Great Britain’s youngest Olympic medalist ever, earning bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Remarkably, she repeated this feat in Paris 2024, securing another bronze in the park competition just days after dislocating her shoulder. Brown’s heritage is also notable—born to a Japanese mother, Mieko, and a British father, Stewart Brown, she has carved a unique path in the sport.

Skateboarding, a sport that made its Olympic debut in 2020, features events in both “park” and “street” disciplines. This year’s competition in São Paolo underscored the challenges athletes face, yet Brown’s resilience and skill solidified her status as a rising star.
